Many neurological or endocrinological disorders can have changes in sleep patterns or brain activity during sleep. The classic example is REM (rapid eye movement) sleep disorder. Normal sleep has two distinct states, non-REM or REM. During REM sleep, rapid eey movemnt occur, breath becomes irregular, blood pressure rises, and there is a loss of muscle tone (paralysis). In a person with the disorder, paralysis is incomplete or absent, allowing the person to “act out” his/her dream.
