This is an interesting question! when we’re sleeping on one hand we are not as responsive to our surrounding, on the other hand, our brain activity (from EEG recording) looks the same as when we are awake! There are also evidence of “memory repay” in model animals. So all of these pointing towards our brain is working during sleep but it is still an debate of what’s happening in our brain during sleep and most importantly, what’s the function of sleep!
